WWII Ceramic Canteen

Black ceramic over steel canteens were made for a bit in 1942 to save on high grade alloys. The ceramic tended to be fairly fragile. Chipping off and exposing the metal underneath to rust so they were discontinued. Actually found one of these it the hills by my house. Unfortunately someone had used it for target practice.

You can see where the ceramic chipped off when dented
I assume this has something to do with heating the canteen? But I’ve also never known ceramic to melt, so I’m not sure.
